Question:

What is a good bar in Philly for my 21st?

My birthday is coming up soon and I'm having people over/going out to the bars at midnight. Any suggestions on where to go? I don't want to have to stand around and wait to get it. I'm looking for something near public transportation (blue line).

  1. shampoo.

    roxy.

    flow.

    rock lobster.

  2. forget philly and head out to the jersey shore.  a lot cleaner than philly and less waiting in lines

  3. Depends, do you like dancing with a live band? DJ? Or just chilling at the bar? For dancing and bands, Finnigan's Wake on 3rd and Spring Garden is always a good choice and it's right by the Spring Garden station on the El. You can combine that with McFadden's too, which is on 3rd right below Spring Garden.

We went to both of these bars for my friend's 21st birthday last year, and she had a birthday special at McFadden's. But that was before midnight, I'm not sure what kind of specials you'd have after midnight.

Finn's can get really crowded, but if you're going after midnight I don't think you'd have too much of a problem waiting. Besides, it's your birthday and people will be getting the drinks for you :)

Manayunk is definitely not accessible by the el, and while Old City is, it's really expensive. You can probably try Mad River on 2nd and Chestnut. If you're not into loud music, you could try Lucy's Hat Shop on 2nd and Market. Both are not too expensive and you can take the blue line to both.

Anyway, good luck and happy birthday!

  4. SO COME SEE ME LOL

  5. Finnegan's Wake

  6. You might as well go to the really bad "Irish" bars like McFaddens and Finnigans if it's your 21st.  I'm sure they're prepared for the pukefest that will follow.  They're abominable places for anyone over 30, so they should do you just fine.

Take Septa in to Market East and either catch a cab or transfer to the El (Market/Frankford line).

  7. Roosevelt's, 23rd and Walnut.  It's not a fancy place...in fact, you've probably even been there already (little light on the ID checks if you ask me), but they have a $7 happy hour on weekdays...$7 cover, penny drinks from 5-7pm.  Same kind of deal on Saturday nights, but it's $10, starts at 10pm and comes with food.  You do that place right and you'll be in bed by 9:30.

Irish Pub is right down the street from there.

A block or two over and down is Noche/Drinkers/Continental.  The first two are drinker bars (actually, so are the others), then last one is a popped pink polo watch-me-drink-$10-cocktails kind of place...not that there's anything wrong with that, just-sayin'.

Check out the two links below.  You don't get too specific, but there are a lot of bars to find out about on those two sites.

  8. I recommend

    Alfa / Walnut Room @ 1709 Walnut

    Xochitl @ 408 S. 2nd

    Apothecary @ 102 S. 13th

    Gigi's @ 319 Market

    Amada @ 217 Chestnut

    Devil's Alley @ 1907 Chestnut

    VIP Lounge @ 38 S 19th

    Byblos @ 114 S 18th

    Pearl @ 1904 Chestnut

These places are just a bit more upscale and trendier than places listed by others.
