I'am getting a Dwarf Hamster tomorrow. And I have a good cage, and everything. But for the food, I think the best thing is, is to ask the employee people for that. So, the only thing i need is the bedding. Usually in like movies, and once my friend had "Paper Shreds" as a bedding. I think that may work. I do not for sureley know. but, I'd hate my Hamster to get some sort' of disease, or damage. Please help, and give truth answers. Thank-You!

  1. NO PINE OR CEDAR IT WILL KILL THEM!!!...I use carefresh it makes it not smell for 1 or 2 weeks sometimes more and it fluffy and comfy for the or even an off brand of carefresh if you see carefresh you will know what the off brand loomks like when you see it good luck!

  2. Never use pine or cedar bedding, it causes swollen paws and respiratory problems in hamsters due to the sharp shavings and dust content.

The best bedding for hamsters is Carefresh. It is non-allergic for hamsters and also absorbs their urine well and all my hamsters have lived happily on Carefresh. Aspen shavings can also be used. I often use ripped toilet paper too. Make sure that the toilet paper is untreated, unbleached and non fragrant. Do not use any other type of paper since they may have bleaches or fragrance in them. One game for my hammies is to put a whole roll of toilet paper in their cage. The next two days is very interesting since watching them tear the toilet paper and make their bedding is sheer fun. Also the empty toilet roll tubes make good toys for the hamsters to play and gnaw. Do not use any bedding with thready or "cotton-thread" texture (though some pet shops sell them for hamsters) since the hamster can ingest them and it can result in a dangerous "hair ball" situation. As for food, feed your hamsters a good brand commercial hamster mix available in all pet shops. These mixes contain grains, seeds and dehydrated veggies and fruits for the right nutrition. You can also occassionally give them treats but treats should constitute only 20% of the hamster's total diet in a day.

  3. just buy a big pack of shaving, i have ONE BIG pack i boguth it 3 months ago and i still have some left. if you want softer bedding, i suggest you just put shaving first and when your hamster arrives, give it some pieces of tisse and it will make a soft bedding, make sure there is a small place in the cage, like a small hamster house (i have one) so your hamster will make a nest there 'remember that hasters are natural nest makers :)). My hammie just gave birth last night and she has a bIG BIG COMFY BEDDING (BTW- SHE MADE IT, WITH SOME TISSUE) "scent-free" tissues please, use scent free and ink free tissues.

    Good Luck with your hammy!!

P.S. YOU COULD ALSO GIVE YOUR HAMMIE A SLICE OF CUCUMBER AND A SMALL PIECE OF HARD BOILED EGG IF YOU LIKE. :)

  4. Carefresh (i use carefresh ultra) is deffinately the best, i use it for my dwarf hamster. Its so soft she even uses it in her bed. Carefresh is very moisture absorbing and controls odour as well. and NEVER use pine or cedar bedding, it can kill your hamster.

  5. maybe timothy hay or something.

    the employee should know.

  6. use carefresh, but get either the colored ones or the bleached white. the unprocessed gray one has too much dust that will cause a respiratory infection

  7. Get aspen shavings. Carefresh gets dusty after 2 days and cedar will definetly kill them.

If you use pine let it air out for a few days.
