  2. Your child' s bedtime routine can be just about anything you want. Really, only two factors are essential: One is to keep the bedtime routine calm and include things that help her get sleepy. You can take a bath, tell stories, or say prayers. Or, if your daughter doesn't like those things, sing a song, play a quiet game, or just sit and color a picture. It's also nice to talk about what you did today and what you are going to do tomorrow. The other important thing is that she do the last part of the routine in the room where she sleeps. This will help her associate that place with good feelings, cuddling, and quality time with mom or dad.

It's best do the same routine every day. Your child will be more relaxed if she knows what is coming next, and a relaxed child is more likely to go to bed easily and fall asleep quickly. Also, be sure to include everything that your child may potentially want or need in your routine. For older children, a final visit to the bathroom may be essential. And get that last drink of water in before you say goodnight.

Every family has its own bedtime routines and rituals. Yours may change as your child gets older. It will take some time to develop a routine that is enjoyable and relaxing for everyone.
