  1. Well, i am currently 14 but when i was about 9 i started out with a sears and roebuck 20 gauge single shot. i felt it was just perfect. You could go with a .22 or a 410 if you want very little recoil, but the 20 gauge doesn't have to much.

  2. A semi-automatic .22 caliber rifle is a good beginner's gun, because if you start out shooting anything bigger you'll develop a "flinch" in anticipation of the recoil, and also because .22 long rifle is one of the cheapest cartridge there is, you can get 550 rounds for around $12.

I started with a Marlin model 60 when I was 9 and still have it, it's really accurate, I can hit a .22 shell casing 30 feet away with the iron sights. It's pretty reliable, but i don't like the tube magazine cause it takes forever to reload.

Another good choice is the Ruger 10/22, it comes with a detachable 10 round magazine but you can buy after-market magazines with a capacity from 5 rounds to 50 rounds. You can also customize it with countless after-market stocks, barrels, etc.

If you're worried about cost, Savage also makes some great bolt-action .22s for around $120. Bolt-action means you must manually cycle the action to load a new round into the chamber.

  3. No question... go with a rifle chambered for the .22 LR. It will give you and your son the ability to do a LOT of shooting without breaking the bank for the rifle or the ammunition. The bulk of new .22 rifles can be had in the $200-$400 range. Used, you can definitely land a nice rifle for around $150. I've found that even the lower priced rifles shoot about as well as some of the more pricey variants. I think the real question is what type of action/feed system you want: Bolt action or semi-automatic.

For a 14 year old, I say go with an entry level semi-automatic such as a Ruger 10/22, Marlin Model 60, or a Remington Model 597. I assure any of the three are excellent choices and will give you and your sons many hours of enjoyment.

  4. a 22 bolt action is an excellent choice or even a .410. The .410 is a good gun for learning to hunt small game such as rabbits or squirrels. A 22 mag has the power to take down deer with the properly placed shot. Most brands also have youth models for young sportsmen. Hope this helps.

  5. You need to start with a .22. Not only does it have minimal recoil, the ammunition is cheap and you can practice a lot.

You will get 1000 opinions, but I started with a bolt action. So did my son. It's almost impossible for a 14 year old to resist the temptation of rapid fire. A bolt action requires repetition of fundamentals that will help you develop proper shooting skills

  6. airsoft or real gun?

    Airsoft Gun: AK47

    Real GUN: A simple rifle

  7. for a 14 year old with no experience in handling guns, I'd recommend a bolt action or Lever action .22 long rifle.   cheap ammo, quite accurate, almost no recoil, and tons of fun.   I wouldn't go with a semi automatic because he will have a tendency to go for more shots instead of making his shots count......in other words, with a bolt action he will be forced to focus on aiming more instead of making lots of lead fly

  8. red ryder bb gun

  9. It all depends on your experience. I began with 22 at 8 yrs old. i had a .223 to shoot varments with at 10 yrs old, and began deer hunting with a 30-30 at age 12.  since you are 14, i dont see a problem with going with a .223.

Any 10/22's are a good choice too.

  10. Marlin model 60 or Ruger 10/22 with adult supervision.

  11. I bet if you ask 100 posters in this category, 90 will say that they started with a .22 rimfire rifle. It's probably the best choice to learn with - no recoil, plenty of power to hit targets and small game, ammo is cheap, noise level is low. One of the other posters said to start with a bolt action, to avoid the temptation of rapid fire. I actually learned on a single shot rifle, because my dad's favorite hunting phrase was "one shot, one kill". Once you learn the basics on a .22, including safety rules, principles of aiming, and good sportsmanship, it will be time to graduate to a more powerful firearm.

If your next step is a deer rifle, I'd go with a .243 bolt action rifle, if possible, in a similar size and weight as the .22. Another great choice is a .30-30, which is perfect for short range shots, especially through heavy brush areas.

  12. I'd say a .22 lr

  13. if you aren't going to be hunting with it, i mean like deer hunting then go with a 22. LR. It is a fun rifle and amazing for begginners. If you are going to be hunting then get a 22-250, or a 223. if it coyotes you will be hunting and if it is bigger game a 243. or a 270. would be a good choice

  14. Go to a local gunshop and look at .22s.  There are alot of makes and models but try for something that's not semi-automatic to encourage good shooting habits.

  15. im 13 and know a bit about guns  when my friends ask me what guns do they need to go hunting with me i say go to a few gun stores get a marlin 60 priced at around 50-75$ then get a 30-30 used for 200-225 and get a mossberg 500 12 gauge for 150$ so thats 400-450 to hunt for the rest of ur life then buy 2 boxes of 30-30 shells there about 12-14 a box shoot one box to sight in ur rifle then keep the rest  1 box will usually last me 2 seasons then buy 500 rounds of .22s 20$ this is wat ull learn to shoot with then buy  wat ever shells ull need for the 12 gauge (bird shot buck shot turkey loads or slugs) then ur good to go
