  1. Honda VFR400 or RVF400, small, light, easy managed and fast enough for someone starting out on.  It'll be reliable too provided you get one that hasn't been thrashed round a race track.

  2. dont buy a harly sportster yet try a small used bike like yamaha 250 no more than a 750 or it could be to heavy or try a dirt bike get the feel and move up

  3. a ninja 250 would be perfect for you

  4. I got a mountain bike, you can get them in all sizes, and you can go anywhere with them, but If you're going to just bike on the road like for RAGBRAI, I sugest you get a hybrid or a road bike, which are WAY more expensive.

  5. I love the BMW F800 ST, just as a personal preference.

But Joe B's answer is mint. :)

  6. Joe B's list is pretty good...

    i'd also reccomend a good used cbr600 (f2, f3, f4i)

just keep the revvs low until you get some riding experience...

  7. Assuming the bike fits you ( feet flat on ground or very nearly so) a Kawasaki Ninja 250cc. However around here ALL the 500 cc and smaller bikes and scooters are sold out. When the Ninja 250cc come in it will sell immediately so be prepared. I'll bet you'll pay top price w no bickering and doc and set up and shipping and a few other freshly dreamed up gems. So, possibly make your first bike a cruiser, say a 250 Honda rebel or a 250 Yamaha V twin. The yammie is very cute BTW. Your money, do as you wish. Buy a helmet, enjoy the ride.

  8. Kawasaki 250 Ninja

    Kawasaki 500 Ninja

    Suzuki GS500S

    Yamaha FZ6

    Suzuki SV650

    Kawasaki 650 Ninja

    Kawasaki Verseys
