What is a good beginner trip for someone looking for adventure?

I've always gone to the beach or the mountains for relaxation. Now that I'm older and seeing that there is so much to do in the world, I want to go on an adventerous trip and explore the world, but I'm unsure of where to start and what a good first adventure would be. What was yours and what did you think?
