  3. Without narrowing your requirements, there are too many answers for the space provided so I'll give you some guidelines. If you plan on cycling alot, maybe 60-100 miles a week, I recommend you spend a little extra money and get a bike with at least a carbon fiber rear triangle and carbon fork. A full carbon bike would be best but be prepared to spend a bit more extra cash.

No matter what you spend, make sure the bike is the right size for you and is properly fitted and setup by a trusted shop or an experienced  friend. This is really more important than the brand you go with and will save you a lot of pain in the long run.

Once you decide on a bike, you can go with lower grade components to save money now and upgrade slowly in the future. Shimano 105 is a great group to start out on.  Do not go cheap on any body contact points. Get a good saddle you can use for years. This might require that you test ride more than a few saddles until you find one you like, but it will be time well spent. Good gloves with gel or gel bar tape will also make a difference. Of course, wear a decent helmet that fits and has good ventillation.

As for specific models, I recommend (not in any specific order): Trek Pilot, Specialized Roubaix, Giant OCR.  There are many other model but the geometry of these bikes are what can start with. These are more sporty type bikes and a commuter style (think road wheels on a mtn. bike) might better suit you depending on the type of riding you do.

I am assuming this is a charity ride or an organized tour with friends. If this is your first century, be able to ride 65 miles without stopping more than once. This will prepare you for an enjoyable ride that you can talk during and not be wasted at the end. Take the time to do a few training rides of 50 miles or so on your new bike to make sure it is fit right. This is on top of some weekly 20-30 mile rides. Then attempt to do a 65-70 miler the week before the century.

A good pair of cycling shorts with a quality chamois cream will also make for a more enjoyable ride.

    Good luck and have fun.
