Laurie Halse Anderson is a really great author.

I highly recommend her book "Speak". Anything by her is such an awesome read.

What kinds of stories do you like? If you like scifi/fantasy Eragon and The Merlin Conspiracy are really good.

I also enjoyed Freakonomics, even though it's not a single story.

If you want to get into Shakespeare, Hamlet was really good too; i suggest the Folger edition because of the notes they give to help understand.

Also House is a good sort of scary book.
