Smith its not the last name, but is actually similar...defiantly more unique. We want the second name to be James after his grandfather. What would be a good first name?

  14. James is a great middle name, and I like the idea of using family names in the middle slot.

A lot of first names will work.  Since James and Smith are both one syllable, you'll definitely want to choose something that's two or three syllables long.  You'll probably want to avoid first names that start with J or end in S, unless you like alliterative names (which I usually don't).

Do you have any idea what style names you like for boys?  Traditional names?  Modern names?  Uncommon names?  Biblical names?  Irish or Welsh names?  Spanish or Italian names?  If you can narrow it down to several styles, this website has excellent name lists, and it's one of the most reliable in terms of meaning and origin:

This website has a great search feature that will let you find other boys' names that start with "Col," for example, or other names that end in "by."  (Collin, Colton, Ashby, and Toby are all similar in sound to Colby, and they have the added bonus of not being associated with cheese!)

Here are some boys' names I like that I think sound good with James Smith.  Some of them might not be your style, but maybe you'll find something you like:

    Gideon James

    Ewan James

    Evan James

    Owen James

    Milo James

    Adrian James

    Gabriel James

    Caleb James

    Wyatt James

    Kenneth James

    Henry James

    Kenton James

    Ezra James

    Micah James

    Steven James

    Davin James

    Levi James

    Oliver James

    Maxwell/Maximilian James

    Garrison James

    Harrison James

    Garrett James

    Elliot James

    Camden James

    Rylan James

    Quentin James

    Cullen James

    Callum James

Good luck, and I hope this helps!

I know a couple of boys with the name Colby and not one of them has ever been teased or joked with about it being a cheese.  However you are right.......it is a popular cheese.  I like the name a lot too!!!!  Would be really sad if his name was Colby jack =}  On the other hand there is a very nice town in KS named Colby.  You could also spell it with a K to set it apart a bit.
