  1. Trane and Carrier=You pay for advertising.

I just bought a 3 ton Goodman for $1200 installed, outside unit only.

Entire central air system with inside ducts, etc.:  who knows.

  2. There are many variables ,square feet to cool as an example, most all brands are comparable,I have a Heir which i am very happy with,2 ton for about 1200 sq ft .before that i had a G.E. for 30 years.I just replaced it for $4,000 using my duct work from the original installation

  3. I have your answer. You have to do some homework. It is not really important what brand you purchase if it it can't be repaired in a timely fashion. Parts, and contractors who can repair those units are the most important for you.The more contractors who repair with parts available are your homework. Find this out, and you will purchase a unit  you can depend on, and get repaired when it fails. Hope this helps.

  4. There is no way anyone can answer this on the web.  There are way too many factors like how big is your home, what is the heat load, local labor rates, difficulty of duct and equipment installation.  You should call a local contractor and get a free estimate.  Get several they are free.

As far as brand I recommend Carrier but there are many good one including Trane, York.  There are also brands like American Standard which are exactly the same as Trane and made in the same plant.  The contractor should be some help with this too if they are honest and sell several lines.

  5. You can go to Lowe's or home depot, they have everything you need, including the units and prices. They will also guide you to a contractor that can install it for you. If you are brave you can do all of it yourself, except the gas or freon. You have to be a certified licensed tech to do this. No one can just go and buy the stuff, it`s regulated.

I put in a 3 ton Trane unit myself and just had the supplier send a tech over to charge it. $35 is all the charging cost, that was 25 yrs ago. The unit is still working like a champ, in fact it`s running as I`m writing this. I swear by this brand, but I`m sure there are others that are just as good. No idea how good the hardware store units are, caution on that one!

As far as an estimate, no one here can give you an accurate one. Many factors are involved for that. My install was easy, all the duct work was already in.
