I'm looking at replacing my old woofers in my boxes as well as building new boxes and putting my ESS® AMT tweeters in them. If you know anything about home audio components, then you know that ESS tweeters have AMAZING sound, clarity and loudness! So I want to find a set of 15" woofers (NOT SUBwoofers) that will have a lot of power, good clarity, good frequency responce and are of VERY good quality and dependability.

Any Ideas?

  2. I would have suggested some Adire Audio drivers had you asked this question about a year ago. They made some of the best drivers out there and the company owner, Dan Wiggins, was a genius with some of his motor designs. The best part was that most of their stuff was relatively inexpensive.

Since you can't buy from them anymore, I would look at Exodus Audio which has a design from Dan that centers around the XBL2 motor design. Basically, the principal revolves around keeping a nearly linear motor strength curve while maximizing the peak-to-peak throw on the woofer. Essentially, the amount of air moved is maximized while the amount of non-linear distortion is kept to a minimum as long as the cone material is rigid enough. A 15" driver is considered a subwoofer and there is some terrific music out there that utilizes the bottom octave (I used to have Adire Shivas that were nearly linear until 15Hz). If you can build boxes that are bigger, I would definitely suggest modeling (on a program like WinISD)  the woofers to not drop off until 20Hz or lower.
