I want something nice, but I don't need the most expensive, super-fancy type. I am more interested in quality and durability than looks.

  1. Brunswick

  2. 3 separate occassions I purchased used 4x8 commercial tables from pool rooms going out of business, changing to coin op, or simply expanding to different equipment. each time was a good buy to me (never paid over 1500.) Look around and ask pool rooms if they have or know of 1 for sale. Many times a room owner will be offered a table by others and they might can help you. The other plus is most commercial tables are well built (all of mine were Brunswick) and any flaws will have already shown up.

    Luck

  3. Diamond (although they are expensive), Olhausen, Brunswick, and Connelly, in that order. The latter 3 companies have models that will not set you back too much. Lesser known, import models are often of quite inferior quality, even if they have slate. Go with one of these brands, and you'll have a table for 40 years that won't fall apart.

  4. You want a slate table.  I have a Proline table.  Other manufacturers are Brunswick and Olhausen.

Suggest you look for a used one on craigslist or local newspaper.  Like exercise equipment most people use a pool table for a short period of time when it's new, then they decide to sell it after it collects dust for awhile.  I see them in my local paper all the time.

They aren't hard to take apart, but you should pay a professional installer to set it up for you.
