I have been target shooting for almost a year with a junior NRA club and now want to buy my own gun. I want a 22 riffle to start out with but I don't know much about the brands and how much it will cost. Can anyone help me?

  1. Depending on the shooting organization you belong to, the action that you choose is vital. Most national match associations allow you to use bolt action rifles. The remington 700 series of bolt action rifles does offer the 22LR chambering. You should also consider the 22 winchester magnum chambering. If you are able to spend a liitle more cash you can certainly find a better rifle. If you decide that a 22 semi auto is for you, buy a ruger 10/22. The aftermarket stuff for this rifle is amazing. And they can be bought brand new for less than $200

  2. Since you know you want a .22 the rest is easy.  The Ruger 10/22 is a great basic semi-auto 22 LR that has nearly unlimited add-ons for the small game hunter or target shooter.  You can order your Ruger 10/22 already setup for target shooting competition from Ruger for around a thousand US dollars, or have it done as you go along.  I think you'll really like this one.

  3. The ruger 10-22 is the staple of any decent gun collection. Every man in my family owns one and all the women have fired them. The recoil is non-existent, the accessories are numerous, and the ammo is cheap but lethal. The perfect all-around purchase.

  4. the best thing to do is shoot as many different typs of 22 to find the one that suits you best and then get the best  you can afford. take some one who you trust and has a good eye for a value rifle

  5. Good brand of rifle for women? --- Your in luck!  The same brand that men use.... Ruger, Savage and Remington all make a fine rifle....

    Ruger 77/22 -- Very nice....

Some will suggest the Ruger 10/22.....   Get the better model. The Ruger 10/22T. Its got a heavy target barrel...

  6. i would suggest getting a ruger 10/22 it is a good size reliable and descent price

  7. I like Remington.  Winchester is also pretty nice.

    I'm a guy.

  8. That's how I got started plus shooting crows and rats at the old town dump. For the Club Shoots we used Savage-Stevens bolt action rifles. So you probably are familiar to something like that. There are a whole bunch more types of 22 rifles out there.

You need to try a few other brands and action types before making any decisions and asking your parents to buy the gun.

  9. LOL....since you mentioned women I'll point out that the Ruger 10/22, which is a very fine rifle, can be purchased with a pink stock for about $250.

  10. Ruger 10/22. i own one myself best .22 i could ask for. shot a grouping of 10 shots the size of a nickel(no kidding. aiming for thumb tac that was there to hold target). very accurate, very durable, and customizable. i got walnut checkered stock with. but you can get any kind of stock and even a bullpup style stock. it is able to mount a weaver rail and any thing that can go on that rail can go on the gun. i like something bigger caliber but i would never sell this gun.

  11. Best semi automatic: Ruger 10/22

    Best Bolt action:        Ruger 77/22

    Best Lever action: Henry H001Y

  12. You need to find a rifle that fits your size and frame comfortably. What works for your friends might not feel good to you. Go to the gun shop and try out different types and brands. Also figure out what type of action you want. Semi-auto, bolt action, lever action, single shot, etc. You also have to decide what you are going to do with the rifle. Plinking, hunting, targets, etc. By a gun that works with what you plan on doing. Don't just buy a gun because someone says it's good then try and make it fit your lifestyle. Lots of people say get a Ruger 10-22. I had one and it constantly jammed, no matter what ammo I used and it wasn't very accurate either. I got tired of trying to make it work and sold it for a Henry Frontier lever action. It has worked out great for me. The octagon barrel is very accurate and it is quite pleasant to shoot. But if you're going to be target shooting with a club I assume that means scoped rifles. How much do you want to spend? CZ makes nice .22 bolt action rifles that can be scoped.

  13. The Ruger 10/22 is the best one you can get for everything, I bought each of my six daughters one.  They are reliable and long lived and if my daughters can't destroy them then they will last a normal person forever.  They are also very accurate.  Don't think of women as different when it comes to firearms, or anything else for that matter.  One of my daughters packs an AK47 behind the seat of her pickup to use on anything that bothers her horses; another carries a 45 Detonics in her purse (asked her why 45 and she pointed out that she "borrowed"  45 ammo from me and it was cheaper than buying it); duh!!!, that was a no-brainer I decided.  Poor men don't stand a snowballs chance in you know where against the brainpower and savagery of females.
