  5. Any camcorder in that price range will work for you, but they probably won't take very good still photos.  Most camcorders are only capable of taking 3-4mp photos.  Some newer camcorders can take 6-10mp photos, but most of these cost more than $500.

Since you are recording memories, we highly recommend an HD camcorder that records to HDV tape.  Regardless of the manufacturer of your camera, all DV tape cameras work the same and can (in most cases) be operated with one hand.

HDV tape will allow you to save your memories on tape for a long time.  You will be able to connect the HDV camcorder to your computer via a simple Firewire cable (normally the 6-pin to 4-pin model) and use Windows Movie Maker on your Windows computer or iMovie and iDVD in iLife on your Mac to capture the video from the DV tape to your computer.  Your editing program can then edit the video into high quality home movies for transfer to DVD or use on a personal website, blog, or video sharing site like YouTube.  You will be able to keep re-editing these tapes into more home movie as time goes on and as more videos are recorded.

HDV camcorders can use HDV tape, miniDV tape, and other versions of DV tape in the same mini cassette.  We recommend Panasonic AY-DVM63PQ Professional Quality tape.  It is available from Amazon in packs of 10 for half the price of the consumer tape in Wal-Mart and other stores.  This tape is twice the quality of consumer level tape and is very similar to the more expensive HDV tape.  Like HDV tape, the Panasonic Professional Quality tape can be stored for long periods of time and be re-used hundreds of time before losing quality.

Another type of video camera currently available are those that record to the AVCHD format.  They are some of the newest consumer camcorders on the market, but you will need to purchase a more updated editing program to be sure you can handle the AVCHD videos.

If you get a flash memory or miniDVD AVCHD camcorder, you will need to stock up on SD cards or miniDVDs, or you will need to invest in an external hard drive for storing the multiple videos.  If you get a hard disc drive (HDD) AVCHD camcorder, you will definitely need an external hard drive.  We recommend getting an external hard drive that has at least 500gb of storage.  They are now available for $100.

You may also need an external hard drive for your HDV camcorder, but it is only necessary when you want to edit your videos.  Until then, you can save money by storing your videos on the DV tape until you have enough to start editing.

  6. this is over $400 but my personal favorite

  7. I would definitely go in this direction it is a Sony so it will last and it has a hard drive so you  save on buying DVD's or Mini-VHS tapes here is the link by the way I know your max is 400 but the camera is 450 but it will be well worth it.
