My wife and I both are looking at getting into photography. We were wondering what would be a good camera for us both to get. We are trying to keep the price under $500.

Thanks

  1. It really depends in what you are looking to do with photography. If by getting into photography, you mean that you want to do it as an enthusiast, or a hobby and eventually make it a career, then you should probably start with an entry level DSLR such as a Nikon D40 or a Canon Rebel XTi which you can probably find for around $500 for the body and basic lens.

Any entry level Nikon or Canon DSLR will allow you to control camera settings such as the Aperture, Shutterspeed, ISO, Lens type, and more. If you are wanting to become a professional, or even produce enthusiast quality imagery, you need to be able to control these options. Most point and shoots don't allow you to control these settings.

If you need something small and portable that you can take anywhere just for fun. Then you should get a smaller point and shoot.

If you are looking for something small, but want to have the creative ability to control the same settings as you would on a DSLR, there are a few new cameras on the market that pitch themselves as full feature point and shoots, such as the Canon G9. However, these are close to the price of entry level DSLRs and do not have the ability to interchange lenses.

    Hopefully this helps a bit.

I am a professional photographer. We shoot on Canon 5Ds and 40Ds as backups. There are pros and cons to both Nikon and Canon, just realize that whichever brand you choose, you marry since your lenses do not fit on other brands.
