You wont be finding a Civic anytime soon at 5k thats in good condition.  I would recommend a Ford Focus which can be had at a very cheap price, and is a great choice when looking at economical cars.

You can find Civic in great condition for $5K.  My 94 civic has 187K miles and the engine and tranny and suspension runs like new.  I drove from NYC to Chicago AND BACK (1600 miles) in 2 days.  

This kind of car would NOT cost $5K.

Oh, I also have 2000 Audi A4 with just 60K.  I just trust my Civic that much.

At your price range, I would OPEN the doors and get whatever is in good condition as the condition of old used cars are more dependent on the owner's maintenance habit - than the cars original heritage.

honda civic....good mpg..safe,,,big enough to enjoy...easy to repair. low cost insurance

Perhaps a good condition Toyota. Any of the Corollas from the late 90s early 2000 should fit your budget and would be fine for you. They are reliable and very easy on gas. They stand a fair amount of beating and are not temperamental about servicing. Cheap parts also goes in their favour.

98 Acura CL, 98 Ford Mustang V6, 98 Honda Accord or Civic, 98 Nissan Frontier or Pathfinder, 98 Subaru Impreza or Legacy, 98 -00 Toyota Corolla or Echo 00

these are all reliable and will last longer than other cars in this price range.
