  1. if you want something cheap, go for a honda rebel. you can get a brand new one for like 4k. But if you want something you wont regret buying. get a V-star

  2. The 500cc Vulcan is good but for your height I'd look around for a 600cc Honda Shadow.

  3. you looking to do highway speeds or intown riding?

if it's intown you could easily get by on a honda rebel.... (could handle short drives on the highway, just not the ideal bike for highway riding)

if you wanna go bigger or for longer work commutes that involve extended highway driving,  kawa has a 500cc vulcan.

  4. Honda Rebel 250 or Honda Shadow VLX 600.  The Rebel is only about $3100 new.  The Shadow is around $6000.  Both are very cheap used.

  5. Look used so when you want to move up you can get your money back out of it.  Lots of choices in the used market so just look at traderonline and compare to see if it is a good price or not for the same bike.

  6. Four words: Used Yamaha Maxim 650.

Everyone in our family has owned one - at one time or another. They are bulletproof. They run for years, with little or no maintenance beyond oil changes, battery charges over the winter (6 months long where I come from) and tire pressure checks. They're not too big for in-city traffic and hold their own on the highway on road trips. They moved our 6 foot / 200 lb family members around just tine. They do a decent job carrying luggage, especially with a little rack in the back. They have a comfortable, upright position with sensibly placed handlebars. Its the perfect starter bike - its position and riding style are neutral; from there you can figure out what your "bike personality" is. After a year or two, if you find yourself hunching over the tank it and wishing you could go faster - upgrade to a sport bike. If you find yourself slouching back and wishing it had more low end power - get a cruiser. If you find yourself riding over lawns and curbs get an dual purpose on/off road jobbie (..or learn to control the clutch!)

    d**n, I miss my Maxim...
