What is a good cheap way to explore new zealand, particuarly the south island, from wellington?

Take the Interisland ferry http://www.interislander.co.nz from Wellington to Picton and jump on a bus!

Try the Backpackers bus the Kiwi Experiance.  http://www.kiwiexperience.com , basically you buy a Regional Bus Pass, or a ticket that allows you to get off and on the bus as you wish.  At the mo there is 30% discounts online ....

BUT ... on saying that check out Grab-A-Seat.  http://grabaseat.co.nz They have very discounted airfares around NZ and you might be able to score yourself a bargin.  It changes daily so be sure to check !

Stand at the side of the road and wave a thumb. It may not be the safest way, but it works for some (and some get murdered) .
