What is a good choice for a first time red wine drinker?

Austalian shiraz or chilean(maipo valley) cabernet sauvignon.

I would go with a a Merlot. It is the most mild of the reds so it is a good way to ease into it. A Shiraz will have a bit more zing to it and Cabernet is the most robust of the reds.

Those are three of the more common of hundreds of varieties of red wine, so hopefully it is a good starting point.

Ravenswood Zinfandel.

Reasonably priced with a lot of interesting flavors - Fruit & Spice.

Pinot Noir is a nice, light red wine.  A good starting point.

French Beaujolais.

It is light (made from the Gamay grape), low in acid (the most common complaint of someone new to red wine is that it is "bitter" - Beaujolais will not be), and sees no wood aging (i.e. decreased tannin levels).

Plus, it can be chilled, which makes it a refreshing summertime quaff.

I'll agree with the Pinot Noir suggestion. Although some new world Pinots can be pretty big, it's generally going to be the lightest, nicest red to try and can easily be consumed without food.

It is cheaper than water, and is a GREAT starter red if you prefer sweeter whites...

There is exactly one kind of wine that I actually like, and it's found at Walmart and Kroger too. It's Wild Vines blackberry merlot. I am in no way an expert on wines, but that's the one I enjoy.
