  1. I don't know what sweet itch is but if it's anything like rain rot I just A and D cream on it. It clears it up in usually just a day.

  2. there is no cure for sweet itch but ways to sooth it naf d-itch is good also use a fly rug when the horse is turned out and try to stay away from garlic as it makes it more itchy for the horse.

  3. Here I go AGAIN!  LOL

Well if you're willing to try anything, here's a decades old remedy for it... Motor oil (New or used). Simply paint your horse with it and it will kill the fungus. Leave it on at least a month and within 2 weeks of painting it on, you'll see new hair growing in hairless spots.

  4. there is not any cure because it is a reaction to the midges so to help prevent it you need to try keep the midges off as much as possible. There are loads of rugs that cover the horses up well, in particularly the 'Boet' rugs <not sure if thats how you spell it exactly!>. They cover pretty much every thing bar the legs. there are lots of sprays that work quite well too. i found the Naff Deet spray was good. there is also a lotion called Swtich that is strong but good for stopping them itching and also Avon Skin So Soft which you can buy from most Avon catalogues also helps prevent them itching and is relatively cheap too.

  5. hi ya,my horse gets sweet itch pretty bad and ive tried everything before and nothing worked, this year ive been using avon skin so soft spray and so far he hasnt rubbed once!!normally by now he hasnt got any mane left and can get quite sore.ive heard other people use this so i gave it a go and its working a treat...good luck,x

  6. There are many creams and liquids on the market but the two of the best are:

    Neema Oil - Natural remedy

De-Itch by NAF - a natural remedy with healing properties

  7. theres all sorts of lotions and potions available and just simpkly wearing a full fly rug

  8. Sadly There Is No 'Cure'

My Little Mare Suffers From Sweet Itch

I Suggest A Boett Rug They Are Amazing However Are Quite Expensive, You Could Use A Normall Sweet Itch Or Fly Rugs That Cover The Whole Body, Neck and Use A Fly Mask Aswell.

I Also Reccomend Kill Itch By Carr&Day&Martin. Its About £20 A Bottle But Its Good Stuff.

I Also Use Udder Cream As In The Stuff For Cows Udders Its Good For Sores.

For Open Sores Use Horse Antiseptic Spray Such As Purple Spray And Then Cover With Vasilene.

Also Keep Your Horse Well Bathed. I Use Tea Tree Shampoo.

Also Try And Bring Your Horse In During Peak Midge Times If You Can. These Are Dusk, Dawn And Mid Day When Its Warmest.

Hope This Helps... I Know How Stressful Sweet Itch Can Be.

Although It Could Be Worse Cos My Little Mare Has Athsma ASWELL :P

  9. There is no cure, my pony has sweet itch and its horrible to watch him suffer so badly :o(

Rosie M - I think i may try your motor oil idea, is this any type of motor oil!!?!?

  10. I have recently bought a  pony with sweet itch. I called out the vet who recommended that i buy a boett blanket, which I have and he wears it 24/7 I was told to bath him every day with a medicated shampoo which i cant do every day because of uk weather, then i spray with coopers fly spray specially for sweet itch and I put on killitch to stop hime itching his tail and a low dose steroid which the vet recommended and then he has  homepathy tablets for sweet itch. He is feeling much better and looking much better. It is the caulicoid moseys that land in the mane and tail and body that they are allergic too......but i also heard that moving to a new home can bring it on, My vet ssaid stable dusk to dawn but i dont because all he does is rub against the wall and door so I put him in a windy field with electric fencing that he cant rub on and the mossies dont like the wind, keep well away form foresty areas and ponds . Hope this helped you cant cure it but you can manage it.

  11. Hmmm... it really depends... firstly what caused the itch?? if its a sweat related thing or an alergie related rash... once you find out what caused the itch you can do lots of things to help get rid of it...

If its an allergic reaction to something you need to find that something, be it food or a weed or a plant, and remove it.. and put something soothing like potties or paw paw cream on the skin, and as long as the horse doesnt come in contact or eat the thing giving it the reaction it will get better very quickly..

If its sweat related you need to wash or curry comb your horse more oftern, especially if you are riding... but horses sweat in hot weather so you might consider giving him/her a bath every evening if possible and scrubbing off any dead or collect skin cells with a betadine scrub to clean the area and help it recove...

what else... ummm i know there is something else...and i cant remember it... any way basically you need to find out whats causeing the itch... remove that... clean the irrated area with something like a betadine scrub to remove anything foriegn and to generally clean the area... then dry it very well and apply something soothing like paw paw cream... and repeat pretty much every day... good luck :)

  12. a couple of horses at the place i work got it pretty bad,  talk to your vet and you can get an antihistamine in a shot form,   the horses i worked with got the shots twice a week.  it stops the itch, so their hair can start to grow back.

  13. There is no "cure" as such because it's an allergic reaction to the midge bites.

You can use sprays, lotions or rugs to keep the midges off or you can add garlic, marmite, cider vinegar etc to the feed to make the horse smell less attractive to them or you can get anti-histamine shots from the vet.

  14. Aloe vera is quite good at easing the itch, but there is no cure cure. Fly repellants can help as well.
