What is a good deck to make for Magic: The Gathering?

I like poison and elf decks.. any suggestions?

  1. If you are going for a poison deck, I would suggest you tap into the awesome power of Slivers. Fast, usually one mana slivers power out the beats, Gemhide sliver fixes all your mana problems, and with the recent addition of Mutavault, it is usually good game by turn four thanks to Virulent sliver, giving every creature you control Poisonous 1.

    If you are going with the Elf deck, I suggest you go Black Green, with the inclusion of several of the green/white elves that are amazingly good. Also in the deck is treetop village, which posers out your bigger beats, the amazing Garruk Wildspeaker, the awesome Chameleon Colossus, and a big pile of elves that can swarm in for the kill. In the deck, you will also find disruption in the form of Thoughtseize, removal in the form of Eyeblight’s Ending, and a load of other good spells. The deck is fairly expensive to make, but one can’t deny that it is effective.

  3. You can make some seriously fun decks of either type.  I have a few elf decks, and one Elder Dragon Legend Highlander deck.

    Now, if you want to make a cheap but effective poison deck, here you go:

    Fire Whip (allows you to tap a creature to do damage)

    Power of Fire (same as above)

    Viridian Longbow -equipment that allows you to tap acreature to deal damage

    Marsh Cobra (Whenever it deals damage to a player, that players gets 2 poison counters)

    Sabertooth Cobra (Whenever it deals damage to a player, that player gets a poison counter and must pay 2 to avoid getting another poison counter)

    Untapping creatures:

    Quirion Ranger - allows you to return a Forest to your hand to untap a creature

    Scryb Ranger (same as above)

    Seeker of Skybreak (Tap it to untap a creature)

    Mana Creatures

    Vine Trellis - wall and helps prodcue mana

    Tinder Wall - sacs to produce red mana

    Wall of Roots - green mana, bigger wall

    Untapping affects in general

    Vitalize - untaps all your creatures

    A great turn goes like this:

    1. Cast Fire Whip or Power of Fire on a previously cast snake, or equip with the Longbow.

    2. Tap to do damage to a player - 1 poison counter (or two, depending on which snake)

    3. Untap the snake with one of my untapping creatures.  If it was the Quirion Ranger, tap the forest to float one green mana.

    4. Tap the snake again. 2 poison counters (or 4)

    5. Untap the snake again with another creature, tapping again to do damage. 3 poison counters (or 6).

    6. Using the green, cast Vitalize, untapping all my creatures.

    Repeat the tapping of the snake for damage and untapping it with an untapping creature.

    Play the land I returned to my hand.  Pass turn if opponent is still alive.  Now, assume I hit him 4 times with the one PC snake - he has to pay 8 mana before the beginning of his upkeep or take more poison counters.  Also, I can return a forest on his turn to untap a snake and posion him more.

    There are better ways to make this deck, but this one is all commons and is worth about 5-10 bucks.  A h**l of a lot of fun to play though, and my friends usually ask me to put it away...

  4. From someone who has been playing Magic for 7 years I can tell you that the most important question you should ever ask yourself is "Do I want to play competitively or not?"

    Initially you will  be blown away by the hardcore players. However, you will become much better at the game. It is good if you are ok with spending hundreds of dollars a year on Magic: The Gathering.My Legacy Goblin Deck is worth over $300 dollars easily if I sold every card on ebay.

    Competive play is categorized into Legacy, Extended, Standard, Block, Vintage and Limited (Booster Drafting and Sealed Deck).

    Or, you can stay on the casual level. This is, in my opinion, much more fun. When you do not have cut-throat competition and Magic decks which cost more than an Xbox 360 it is much more fun. I play casually with friends, but also enjoy to give out 150-ish cards from a certain set or block (A block is 3 consecutive sets, such as Onslaught Legions Scourge/Time Spiral Planar Chaos Future Sight).

    If you want to stay casualc decks I personally like are Elves, Reanimator, Counterspell, Fear/Pro Black, etc etc etc.

    Also, my favorite games are those in which you are given a set amount of random cards to build you deck from. You can either:

    *OFFICIALLY CALLED DRAFTING* Have 3 Un-Opened boosters per person. Open the booster, take a card, pass to the left, repeat. 2nd pack is right, Third back is left again. You have 45 cards and as much land as you want to build a 40 card deck.

    *OFFICIALLY CALLED SEALED DECK*Get 5 boosters or 1 Tournament pack and 2 boosters and make a 40 card deck with those cards and as much land as you want.

    Make up your own distribution of cards (50 50 50 from 3 sets in a block randomly chosen per person).

    The advantage of the first two is that it is more skill-based and everyone gets cards. To get a box cheap (36 packs, enough for 3 four person drafts) try ebay for ~$55 to ~$90 depending on the set.

It really depends on how you want to play, there are so many ways to go about choosing.  Elves are a natural choice for a good old stomping, so try a Tribal Elven Deck.  Essence Warden, Timberwatch Elf, and Wellwisher are a must for a modern survive and smash.  For some a poison style deck  old school scorpions and snakes are the way to go with this (ex. Marsh Viper, Pit Scorpion, Sabertooth Cobra, Snake Cult Initiation, etc).
