  1. Family Tree Maker  (website is http://www.familytreemaker.com/) is very good, this is now an Ancestry company.  I hear that the 2008 edition has several bugs, but I use the 2007 edition and have no unsurmountable problems with it.

"FTM" lets you publish beautiful family trees and text genealogy reports with the touch of a button or two.  It enables you to associate photos and images of original documents with a person and/or a marriage, and you can set it up to show a photo or two per person in your family tree.  You can also store personal and marriage "scrapbooks" in the software.

I published an 810-page family history book in 2006 using the 2006 version of Family Tree Maker, a PDF-generation software called BroadGun (recommended by my publisher for use with Family Tree Maker), and PhotoShop (for editing photos, highlighting areas of special interest in census records, etc.).

    Hope that helps!

  2. Try Ancestry, com. My Mom Tried And She Organized All The Family Stuff From The 1800s.

  3. I use the PAF program.  It is free and you can use the website free too

  4. Apparently the best program is The Master Genealogist. It is a bit complex but once you get the hang of it you will find it does a lot that other programs don't do. One of the best things about it is that you can acess the help desk any time and get a really helpful response back by email. It includes a good family tree maker with lots of options and for a few dollars more you can get GenSmarts which reads your family tree software and makes suggestions on where to look next. But it is a bit expensive. If it is too expensive for you Family Tree Maker is quite good and, as mentioned, PAF is free.

  5. family search.com is free and there are some free paper ancestor charts and data work sheets which you can print, for better organizing your research.

You have to manage your tree on a CD; they do not store it on-line.

ancestry.com is a very good  site, if you are seeking to add to your tree, They have a 14 day free trial, however, after that it does require payment.

rootsweb.com is free, and it too, is a good site.

It's a question and answer forum.

  6. I find Legacy Family Tree software to be really good, esp. since it offers a decent free program.
