Question:

What is a good fire starting product?

We got a firepit a while ago and found that starting the fires was the hardest part.

What products are out there besides fluid/gel that will start the pit well and get it ready for larger pieces of wood?

We had a lot of small tinder but it quickly got used up.

  1. Our experience has been that egg cartons and coffee cup trays (the 4 cup holders) work great for initial start-up with pcs of fire starter logs to sustain a flame. After that it's whatever burns that isn't nailed down! Have fun.

  2. Buy some special logs that are designed to burn for 2-4 hours. I use one inmy firepit and add 2 or  3 wood logs. They work great! they are available at Big Box stores, grocery chains, hardware stores etc.

  3. gas.... paper...

  4. What we do is throw the amount of logs in the fire pit as we want and get some citronella fuel (for the wooden torches) and squirt some over top of the wood, not too much though. Light it and you have FIRE! It also helps with the bugs.

  5. Use the fireplace starter logs they sell at Walmart and other stores.

  6. ball up pieces of newspaper. use small, dry kindling placed in a teepee to get it started. once it's going use the smaller of your logs, again in a teepee,  over the fire. once that's going- you're home free. Happy fire gazing!

  7. Believe it or not, Charcoal is great for that. A small amount is needed and it will even start wet wood.

It's cheap, and leaves little ash to clean out.

Give it a try, it is so easy, just burn it down most of the way and add wood on top. Instant bead of coals keeps fire going until coals build up from the wood.

    Good luck

  8. ~~One of the best things we use when camping has been empty toilet paper rolls, stuffed tightly with dryer lint. Lights easily, it's all free, and takes care of some otherwise throw away stuff!~~
