What is a good first car between 10 and 15 thousand dollars?

The Nissan Versa.  Great little car, big on the inside with a decent sized cargo area.  You won't be disappointed.

My pick would be the Honda civic, Hyundai Elantra, Honda fit, Toyota corolla and maybe the Nissan sentra.  MY overall favorite would defiantly be the Honda Fit. It has great gas millage, looks small but surprisingly has a decent amount of leg and head room and not a bad looking car.

Choose something that has a high MPG, so you save money at the gas pump.  

If you can drive a stick (5 speed) you can save some money there.  

Don't pick anything too sporty because your insurance will be high.

Best bet and to make sure you get one that you can afford, browse through some cars on the internet and right down the names and years, then call your insurance agent and ask them what the insurance costs would be on each of them..
