What is a good first car to get for a teenager?

I am going to be getting a new USED car soon. What would be a good car? I was thinking something like 1995-99 Nissan Maxima. How are they?

I'm open to suggestions. I'd rather get a car from the late 90s.

Get a late 60's VW bug.  They are cheap, simple to work on and fun to drive.  Have fun customizing it.

1987 Honda CRX. 50-55 mpg w/ a 5-speed.

great little cars they still go pretty fast and get amazing gas mileage.

Something people dont think about a lot, I would get him/her a Porsche 924/944. Its a "hot" car, it has a good resale, its not too fast, but fast enough, and he/she can tell there friends "I got a porsche". They are not even that much, you can find a 924 for $1000-$2000 easy. You can get a 944 for $2000-$5000

oh my god some people are sooo dumb!!!!!!!! 1st of all a 924 is more then a 944 and 2nd of all not a good 1st car for a teenager especially one with a relatively tight budget. these are relatively high maintence cars,expensive to work on/parts, and hard to find someone to work on. u could easily sink 2k into a porsche and not even really get anything fixed!! i think that you were going in a good direction with the maxima or altima. another suggestion if you want something that is a little more sporty but still gets good mileage,cheap insurence, and is fun to drive would be a nissan 240sx.
