What is a good form of bait to catch a mouse? I've tried several things and it just keeps taking the food.

I've set several traps and the mouse keeps taking the bait off the trap and it doesn't get caught. What other type of trap can i use to catch this mouse? I've used peanut butter with cheese, peanut butter and bacon, i don't know what else to try. Please help. I've used the regular victor traps, d-con traps, and now i am trying a brand called tomcat and nothing works this mouse either goes around it or takes the bait.

  1. just put peanut butter on the trigger part of the trap, smear it on.  this way there isnt anything they can take, he will be forced to sit there and eat it off the trap which should trigger it.

  2. try plain peanut butter and a small amount underside to make them work it...i have had success with the live bait trap mouse goes in circulr and it springs shut..

we release them in woods far away and some go to friend with snake..

  3. Maybe you should think of changing the trap rather than the bait, as there may be something wrong with the spring?

  4. I tried sticky traps but the mice were usually able to escape. The old style spring traps work best. I use chunky peanut butter making sure a chunk of peanut is firmly lodged under the trigger. The mouse is greedy enough to work at getting the peanut and springs the trap. Seldom fails.

  5. There are traps that catch the mouse inside without killing it, then you have to take it away and release it someplace far away! Peanut butter seems to be a favorite with mice. Sometimes the mice manage to get the bait without getting caught because the trap is not set right. It needs to be on a hair trigger setting. Watch out for your fingers!

  6. Ive heard mice love lollies, so maybe try putting something sweet on the trap? Maybe even honey? Or try one of those sticky traps or one where the mouse has to squeeze into it and then cant get out?

  7. use peanut butter, but try the sticky traps instead of the kind that snap shut. that way the only way it can get to the food is to step on the adhesive and the more it struggles the worse it gets stuck.

  8. You've got the right kind of bait.  Wrap a piece of string or thread 3 or 4 times around the trigger and bait so that it will be more difficult for the mouse to steal.  Tie the thread if you want to go the extra mile.  Be sure the thread doesn't cut through the peanut butter.

You can also get a piece of hard candy, like an M&M, and super-glue it to the trigger.  It's un-stealable.

Yet another possibility is that you have rats, not mice.  Mouse traps don't catch rats (although the rats sometimes bleed if they're hit--yuck).  Buy a couple of snap rat traps, Victor makes good ones.  Use thread as above, and see.
