What is a good gentle way to remove old paint / wood stain from a piece of furniture?

We bought an antique high chair...not for collecting but for our baby to be. Trouble is it has a very creepy clown on it and some sort of wood stain that is in bad shape.

Is there something gentle that will remove both the paint & the stain but not hard the wood?

go to your local paint store get a spray can paint remover ..then use stiff brush to brush off old paint when treated w/ said paint remover ...make sure wear proper gloves and protective clothing ..

A good remover is a product called Goof Off.   Apply a light coating, dab or rub lightly it should start working soon.  Go for one layer at a time. Once down to wood, oil the wood and apply wax.    Another technique is to use a piece of glass and pull it at angle against the paint to be removed.  Any glass will do but lab specimen glass is strong and easy to work with.
