Don't go too expensive, who knows? A tie, not too fancy or crowded, something that he likes.  If he likes football, you can get a jacket, shoes, but give it to him lovingly.

anniversary of what, exactly?...you are't married.  you aren't engaged.  after 3 years, and no proposal, you should be looking elsewhere.  unless, you are real young and still in school, in which case, treat him to a movie and a burger.
