  1. if your asking about a book , most tourists are happy w/ "lonely planet" . "dicovery channel" also puts out a colorfull informative pocket guide called "insight vietnam".... once your in viet nam w/ a basic itinerary most tour shops are about the same [ quality and price] and most[not all] motor bike driver/guides are "a ok"..... be adventurous and flexable and you will enjoi vn.

  2. Lisalau generally has the right answer. More specifically, you cannot get a better guide than a native Vietnamese.

There are numerous ESL schools and universities with curriculum that include learning English. Many of these students will be a tour guide for the cost of their travels just for the experience of speaking English in a real world situation. These student guides are not just a great value. They can get you beyond the tourists traps and give you a true experience of Vietnam's greatest asset, which is meeting the Vietnamese people. There is no guide book that can give you that experience.

  3. Stay of the Ho Chi Men Trail and keep your eye out for the VC.

  4. some1 who can speak ur language.

  5. Lutienent Dan "Keep your head down and shut up!"

  6. Get a copy of "Culture Shock - Vietnam"

Also, check the dates of the other books that you can find. Some are quite dated. At least they were the last time I browsed the shelves at B&N.

  7. a vietnamese person
