What is a good hotel in Saigon in the city centre.?

Question

We are 3 people with one being 78. Is it possible to stay in a good room for around $50 per night for 3? We were told the back packers area is where we want to be. We need a hotel with an elevator and also quiet if possible. Also, how much would we expect to pay a taxi from the airport to that area?

I stayed in Saigon in the fall of 06 and I would recommend this hotel.

Located in Pham Ngu Lao street. It is an area that has a lot of travelers and backpackers. Lots of tourist offices but it still feels very much like saigon without feeling touristy. The service is very friendly. Everyone spoke English. The prices were cheap I only paid about 14 dollars a night and the accomodations were good. Satellite tv with access to normal cable channels from the US and Vietnamese tv. I had my own bathroom. It was very clean and breakfest was included.  The hotel looked small from the outside but the room had plenty of space. The hotel was located close to Bin Thanh Market, The Reunification Palace, and Notre Dame Cathedral basically at the center of the city. Oh and yes it did have an elevator.  Id go there again if I was in town. Later and have fun!

I haven't stayed there myself, yet, but my travel agent highly recommends the Hai Long I hotel in HCMC.  It is center city, inexpensive and convenient.

Please forget about the back packers area of Pham Ngu Lau if you want quiet - it can be very rowdy down there. Instead and of much more interest is the area aroung Dong Koi area and from this location you will be able to see many of the cities sights on foot.  For your budget I would suggest the Bong Sen 2 at 61-63 Hai Ba Trung, Dist 1. My daughter and her boyfriend stayed there recently and found it clean and perfectly adequate and the location is good.
