What is a good idea to make my little turtle a small sand bar for his small tank?

Nope nope nope..it will clog the filter and just use large gravel so he can't eat the rocks. Sounds nice..'been there done that' but it just made the tank dirty faster.

Just keep feeding the guppies or minows or goldfish and lettuce..and he will be happy..

You don't want to use soil/sand in a water turtle's habitat, dear.  There is no way to prevent bacteria growth in it, and no way to clean it.

Of course, you didn't say this was a water turtle, either.  Details help, when you are trying to find answers.

As for the small tank - you can't keep either a water turtle or a land turtle in a small tank for very long.

Have you done your homework and googled the species of turtle you have?  Do you know what its specific heating and lighting requirements are, as well as its diet?  Do you know about MDB and UVB?

I would suggest you start there, before you try to set up a habitat for the turtle without understanding what is safe for it, or what could be harmful.

You might want to go back to your "aditional" section and add a few more details about how you are presently caring for the  turtle, and what kind it is, and how big/old, so that you can get the answer you are seeking.

A small, flat dish, glass or plastic, (metal could rust) about the same depth as the water, so the sand doesn't wash out. A flat cookie cutter would give it an interesting shape if it wasn't too shallow.

Honestly, as messy as turtles are, I wouldn't use any loose substrate, too much of pain to clean up...

Turtle docks or logs work really well.  A little expensive, but in the long run,easier to clean.  I use Zoomed turtle docks and logs, great products....
