I am currently majoring in marketing management, and i love dealing with people, I am very friendly and like helping others. I like the idea of marketing and advertising a product, but more gathering information about products, finding out their pros and cons and how or if it fits the consumers needs. What kind of position would this be? What kinds of positions might I like? How would i go about getting there after I get my degree.

  1. Marty,

If you are eager to utilize your marketing degree, there are job descriptions within a marketing firm or advertising agency that would require someone with your skills and aptitude.

At the entry level, this position is known as a marketing coordinator, and eventually evolves into a position called Account Manager.

Account Managers are responsible for conducting market research, developing creative strategies, and managing the day-to-day affairs of their accounts. Good people skills, strong organizational ability, and a solid command of marketing concepts are definitely required for this position. As an Account Manager, you would also work hand-in-hand with the creative department in the production of ads, commercials and other marketing pieces to meet the clients communication goals.

Account Managers are also used on the client side of the business when a company markets more than one product or service. These people work hand-in-hand with outside advertising or marketing firms and/or their own internal creative/production departments.

To improve your chances of getting a job in advertising, I would encourage you to concentrate on your marketing courses. Also, speak to your academic advisor about possibly landing an internship with a marketing firm or agency. First hand experience will be so much more valuable than trying to learn from a textbook. There's just no substitute for learning "on the job."

Also, if you have a chance to participate in any opportunities  (as a class project) to take on an actual firm/non-profit organization or other client, go for it. You will also find this type of experience to be invaluable to you, and it's something nice to have on your resume. Also, keep in mind that marketing relies heavily upon networking, so the more people in the business world that you have a chance to meet, the better.

    Good luck, Marty.
