  1. Engage the students as much as possible. For example, when you teach them nouns, have them find 3-4 during lunch or recess. If you teach verbs, have them act out the action (as long as it's safe). When you teach sentences, use sheets of construction paper (or cut poster board into small pieces) and place different words on it. For example: "John", "jumps", "on the", "bed". Different students hold up the signs and the class puts them in the correct order or identifies the verb, noun, etc, or identifies what word(s) need to be capitalized, using punctuation correctly, etc. I suggest posterboard or construction paper so that you can laminate them and keep them for the next year. You'll also be able to build on them if you decide to teach higher - or different - grades later. Believe me, this can work with kids up to around 7th or 8th grade. Just add to the complexity for higher levels. Good luck!
