  1. You might think I'm being flip, but something you can carry by yourself is a good start.

There are a lot of longboards out there. Serious "Woody"s are actually very heavy and hard to manage from the shore to the water. A lighter one you can carry by yourself is a good start.

"Play it Again Sports" shops have a pretty good variety of used boards, usually very reasonably priced. Craigslist.com is a good place to look up ads for used boards, too. Surf shops are fun but always want you to buy only their brand. The guys at Dive N' Surf in Redondo Beach, CA, that's the physical store, not the online website, will guide you to different brands of longboards that might work for you. The guys at Sport Chalet or Sports Authority will gladly sell you any board but may not be so knowledgeable about what you really need. Ask around before buying. Then pick out a board that you can handle in and out of the water.
