  1. Most of the GPS for cars can be loaded with aviation software.  You could also use a hand held PDA with GPS

  2. 430's under a grand! (snicker) more like 5 or 6 times that!!!

Garmin GPS 196,   is a great vfr handheld . You can find them all over the net, about $700. used, even less..

great bang for the buck IMHO

  3. Get a used Garmin 430, they can be had under a grand........

  4. Here are some nice ones........http://airnav.pltshp.com/itemdesc.asp?Ca...

  5. We use Garmin 430s in our helicopters. Aviation GPS is better than a car GPS because it gets 4 satellites and is less likely to fail. If you decide to do instrument approaches it's good too because it will get RAIM (reciever autonomous integrity monitoring) which is a 5th sattelite. 3 sattelites are for triangulating your position, one for time and altitude, and the 5th one does RAIM if you decide to do an instrument approach.
