I have a son who's 15 starting varsity football this year. He starts 'h**l camp' or 'double sessions' for the next two weeks from 7-330 daily. What is a nutritious lunch to pack for him. I was going to pack a turkey sandwich (no mayo), orange slices and bananas. He's taking gatorade. Feedback appreciated.

  1. Lol Taco lmfao.

Hes gonna need like 3 bottles of water if hes gonna practice that long.

Um, my opinion would be 2 turkey sandwiches lmao, and water.

Or you could put salad in a container and he can take that.

  2. Lol @ Tascado Taco. :D

Anywho, About 3 bottles of water (And tell him to some water aswell).

    Some apples and bananas

    Yeah, turkey sandwiches sound fine.

  3. You're right on track.  The oranges rebuild blood sugar, but at a slower rate than oj. Bananas add potassium and prevent cramps.  Turkey for protein that will sustain him longer, the thinner sliced the better.  Stay away from any dairy as you're doing with the mayo.  Tomatoes will work if he likes them.  Raisins.  Good for you in supporting your son. Keep him off fats during the season as it cuts his wind, and go with pastas the night before games for stamina on game day.  Load up with fluids an hour before games.  Once thirsty, it's usually too late to do your body any good, but simply quenches your thirst.  Gatorade will handle that and the electrolytes.

  4. Nice job with the oranges and bananas. The potassium in the bananas will be great for him. Lots of fruit and protein are wonderful things for your body when you're in between two-a-days. I would recommend more protein than just a turkey sandwich though. When you're eating in between practice, the protein you eat will translate into energy throughout the next practice. Make sure he's drinking plenty of that Gatorade too.

Actually another thing I would recommend is sending your son in with a tube or jar of Icy Hot or Ben g*y. In the NFL guys sit in ice tubs between practices, but since most of us at the high school and college level don't do that Icy Hot is a great way to refresh your legs for the afternoon practice.

In short, just remember to give him lots of liquid, high quality protein, fruit and fruit juice (great with electrolytes and good sugars), and good carbohydrates (wheat rather than white bread). Give your son plenty of encouragement, because the first year of varsity two-a-days is tough.
