Kicks are starting to take a a toll on my knee. I need an art that will be knee-friendly, but still effective for self-defense.

  1. Boxing. I think Karate has more emphasis on the hands than the legs.

  2. "A bad knee" is a relative statement.

When I mangled an ankle I started studying stick techniques.

    Japanese Jujitsu is another alternative.

If you use a cane, zero in on walking stick and cane techniques!

    BTW: Boxing requires footwork!

  3. OMG I cant believe out of all these martial artist nobody has put you in the right direction yet. Get into a Hapkido, Aikido or a Judo style class Im not talking about the ground grappling brazillian style. I mean the stand up redirection type Steven Siegal style of martial arts. Its mostly upper body and fast hands with hardly no kicks. try it youll love it!!!

  4. do not take boxing. Even though it emphasizes on hands, a lot of footwork is involved and most of the power from a punch comes from the legs. The knees will be experiencing a lot of pressure. Also, boxing requires you to build your explosive power of your legs to increase punching power, and this is done by sprinting uphill.

A good martial art for the injured is tai chi. It's usually seen as slow, but when done quickly, it is a deadly art. When practising, you can be slow and simply learn the techniques, but as you get more familiar with them, you can speed it up. Tai chi is developed to combat the 'hard' martial arts by making the fighter 'soft and adaptable'. It redirects punches instead of blocking them, it counterattacks when the opponents show an opening.

Its like hitting water with a baseball bat, no matter how hard you hit, the baseball bat would break before the water.

So unlike a lion that chases his opponents down and bite hard and waste his energy, you are like a snake, waiting for an opportunity to strike, and when you do, you strike the deadliest points. And so, in the animal kingdom, snakes have 5 times the success rate of lions in hunting. =)

  5. Boxing

  6. krav maga. the self defense portion may teach you to use knees/ kicks. but really its all about analyzing and netralizing the threat so when the say knee to the groin you just use palm or punch to the face or throat. you can always sub one move for another and come away unharmed. it is the ultimate martial art

  7. na karate is nasty on the legs and knees

    boxing, wing chun, chow gar

  8. Kenpo seems like one that focuses on the hands alot more...looks like they have mainly LOW kicks, too,so that'd probably be easier on the knee .

  9. wing chun/wing tsun.
