By "eventing" I assume you mean you have a show horse, not the racing kind.

I know little of show horses, but a lot about racehorses.

The NY Jockey Club must approve all thoroughbred names. (May be the same with equestrian animals.)  They reject, I am told, 9 out of ten.

Cannot name a horse after one who was so named within a short timeframe - ten years, I think. Cannot use the name of a famous thoroughbred: Man O War; Kelso; War Admiral; Native Dancer etc etc.

Cannot use a name that is obscene, suggestive or crude.  Though sometimes a wiseguy owner will try, and  succeed.. Some years ago there was a filly running in Calif that was OK'd to be called "Cunning Stunt."   If in the heat of the race the track announcer got tongue-tied . . .

Combine the name of the sire and dam in some creative way to come up with a name fitting your animal, or something that defines his/her personality.
