Question:

What is a good option for health insurance coverage while in college?

I was injured at work and I am being offered a lump-sum settlement by the work comp company in exchange for my immediate resignation. I hate my job and have been thinking about school for a while now, but I'm not sure what to do about health insurance since I'm only going to be able to work part-time while in college. I'm 24 and living on my own, so there's now way I can get on my parents' plan. I looked into cobra but it's really expensive. Are there any other alternatives?

  1. You should check with the University you plan to attend.  Call student services.  They usually offer a very inexpensive health insurance policy.  Your basic services will most likely be provided by the health center at the University.  If that is not offered you can check with my insurance agent at http://www.lvhealthins.com

  2. There are other alternatives to health insurance.  Ameriplan is a National Discount Benefits Company with over 2 million members and over 500,000 providers.  They provide their members with discounts on medical, dental, vision, prescription and more.  The cost for the plans are extremely affordable for a college student and there are no limitations.  With their plans you can save on your fees for service and not pay the high costs out of pocket or the high insurance premiums. If you want to know more you can visit www.SaveonMedicalandDental.com  or send me an email.

  3. Uh....your immediate resignation?  That really sounds a bit (a lot!) illegal.  What state are you in?

Your college should have a student insurance plan.  In fact, many colleges will not let you matriculate until you can prove that you have a health insurance policy.

Also, call your state insurance board, or google "health insurance options for students in your state".
