She was a 10 year old Maine Coon and a big part of our family. She brightened our hearts and home. She is buried alongside a 4 year old apple tree. What plant would do well alongside the tree? A rose bush? A spot of daffodils? Any suggestions?

Agricultural zone 5 bordering 4. Southwestern Maine. Plant would be vulnerable to harsh winter wind.

  1. My cat [a tortishell calico] got cancer a few months ago, and she was put to sleep. It really broke me because she couldn't eat [the cancer was in her asophagus, and throat]. She was like my best friend, and I had her since I was three. She was 11 years old when she died, and I was pretty much heartbroken, and I still am. We buried her under a hydrangea bush, and it's really beautiful. We also but a small solar light underneath it, and I can see it from my room, I look at it every night before I go to bed. I would really recommend doing that, it's really fantastic.

  2. So sorry about your kitty :(   - I know how hard it is...

    Aster divaricatus ‘Eastern Star’

    (Cultivar of White Wood Aster)

    Zone 4

Native from southern Maine to Ohio, this charming aster can commonly be seen blooming happily in late summer and fall in shady woodlands. A delicate carpet of snowflake-white flowers combines well with other native plants, such as gingers, mosses, partridgeberry, and ferns. The small but numerous blooms have white single rays and yellow centers, which change color to subtle burgundy and rose-pink. It is quite showy with its dark twiggy stems and contrasting white blossoms. Grows well in full or partial shade and average to dry soil, reaching 2’ in height and width with a softly sprawling habit.
