What is a good pet for a 6-year old?

Question

My son will be 6 soon and really wants a dog. We live in a condo building in a city and we both work full time so a dog really can't be in the cards right now. A cat isn't an option. Does anyone have any other suggestions of a living, furry pet that we could buy for him that's somewhat low maintenance?

We already have a 10 gallon fish tank. Any sort of spiders and snakes aren't an option either. I've been down that road in my younger days and don't plan on going down it again.
