All you really need to know to avoid HIV, Hepatitis A, etc., is simply that you should avoid exchange of bodily fluids. This includes matters of unprotected s*x, shared needles and handling of biohazardous materials. Aside from that, you should be ok. And don't feel bad for asking. This is an important thing for people to know.
