I-Hop or Cracker Barrel, of the chain restaurants, have the best pancakes. Bob Evans is pretty good, too, on most breakfast items.

If you are going to be in southern california I advice you to search  "Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles". Have you ever heard of it? It was on the Food Channel. My friend met Flava Flav there (West Hollywood location). It is not fine dining- it is located in pretty ghetto areas but what is nice about it is - it is a tourist attraction and it is what local people eat. A lot of hip hop, r&b, and rap musicians have eaten here - you might spot someone famous. How you order is   for ex. one waffle and two drumsticks. Or three waffles and one chicken breast. Locations would be in Pasadena, Long Beach, West Hollywood, and one more that I can't think of at the moment.

Are you going to be around Orange County? If you are - you might like to visit the Orange Circle in Orange. It is basically Old Towne Orange. There is a great pastry shop called "Blue Frog"  (it is the ideal representation of a old townie pastry shop) and or Lucca's. Lucca has a great price for breakfast about $8 for a huge plate. And the Gelato bar gives you exactly what you pay for (an overflowing minicup of gelato).
