What is a good place to stay in Germany when you are a summer homestay student?

Any place with a railway station where trains leave more than once an hour. This basically means most cities over 20,000 inhabitants. Good connections to a larger city (more than 200,000 inh.) within 2 hours of travel is also essential. Having a university in the same town is always a big plus, as it lightens up the nightlife.

i prefer northern germany, ppl are friendlier there but since I've been livin in southern germany for a few years now i gotta tell its ok as well..

Heidelberg. Castles, lots of history, beautiful countryside, the university, great museums, excellent night life, by train easy access to Munich, Paris, Strasbourg, and only an hour by autobahn to Franfurt. Great place.
