I had several bikes 20 years ago, but am out of the loop now. I want a reliable bike that I might tour occasionally on (500 miles or so?). Is shaft drive or liquid cooling an advantage? I would like to keep it under $7000. Does that mean it will probably be used? I have no brand name or style biases. I said between 600 and 800 cc because I think that is plenty fast for my purposes. I'm not going to try to impress anyone with my speed.

  1. Since you use the word "reliable" I would like to use the word "Honda".  I have been using 2 wheelers for the last 29 years.  The most tried and trusted Brand is also the best.  You can go to any nearby dealer and try to locate something practical and within your price range.  Shaft drive can be avoided if you're not into touring but liquid cooling can be an advantage if you want that extra edge in performance.  If you are a contented person, a simple air-cooled twin will be more than sufficient.  Give Honda a try.  You shall be pleasantly surprised.

  2. Depends on what you like. Can't beat a Honda for reliabilty. For another bike I think a Harley Sportster is a great bike with lots of great dealer back up. Me I have a 04 moto guzzi stone and a Harley Vrod. Both very different and wonderful.  Moto guzzi has personality. Made in Italy practily bulletproof. Harley has great clubs and rides. Look at all of them get the one that gets your eye.  Take a rider training course before getting back on a bike...
