A Room in The West End, William Street.  Ask for one of the little caves.  Food is of a high standard, prices are very reasonable. BYOB.  http://www.aroomin.co.uk/thewestend/

I would only go for her birthday if you can get one of the caves, otherwise it can get a bit noisy.  Although, I can happily recommend eating there at any time and I'd be happy to be taken for any reason and I wouldn't grumble wherever I was seated!

The Olive Branch is also very good in Broughton Street and is reasonably priced.

If you don't have a tight budget you could go to Olo Rosso in George Street, The Bonham Hotel in Drumsheugh Gardens, 4th Floor at Harvey Nichols.  

Tiger Lily for cocktails first wherever you are going but don't eat there it's waaaay too noisey for a couple.

Try Urban Angel on Hanover Street - the food is really good, it wont break the bank and it has a really nice atmosphere.  http://www.urban-angel.co.uk/

Call to book a table ahead, and dont be put off when you get there that it looks like a deli - there is a proper restaurant behind the deli area!  

The website will give you the menus and prices...you can get tapas, plus they also usually have quite a good selection of specials on offer (i.e. lamb shank, steak etc).

The prices are pretty steep, but the last time I went the food was fantastic and everyone I know who has stayed  there raves about the rooms.
