  1. Find a secondhand .22 Bolt Action or an auto and it should do the job. However you will have to use the iron sights unless it came with a scope. (In some cases iron sights are  preferrable to use)

  2. A good rifle will be one that

    You are comfortable holding

Does not come with a scope

    Cost more than $400

I would suggest saving up some more money and alway look for used. You can get great deals that way, just have someone who knows about firearms with you to look it over.

  3. If you just want a good gun for $200, try an NEF.  Very good gun and I am being told they shoot very well.

If you are wanting a gun for hunting, the NEF is still a good gun for that, but putting a bit more money together would get you into a Savage.  Very good shooting guns.

  4. A .22lr is cheap and so is the ammo.

  5. Something used.

Unless you mean to include Marlin Model 60 and Ruger 10/22.

  6. A nice .22 LR would be the least expensive to shoot.

    Ruger 10/22

    Marlin 60

  7. If you have a 22lr already (if not, I'd be looking at a marlin 925), I'd say spend the extra 20 bucks and buy a Marlin 917 17hmr. Of course that doesn't come with a scope but the gun is capable of outshoot centerfire target rifles at the shooting range on calm days. It's definatly a confidence booster when the rifle and factory ammo do that.

  8. For sheer fun and reliability take a look at the Mosin-Nagant 91/30; a long barreled rifle; or a M44 Carbine; short barreled.  I am seeing them in the 59 to 89 dollar range; I bought 5 of the carbines for 200 on a sale several month ago.  The 762x54R caliber is about like 30-06 and ammo is plentiful and cheap.  Just a few of the places to look are J&G, AIM, SARCO, Interarms, CIA, SOG.

  9. Ruger 10/22.

It's simple and reliable. You can hunt with one, and you can shoot one almost anywhere. Ammo is cheap, plentiful, readily available and made worldwide. You can add all sorts of accessories to it. There are even registered full-auto trigger packs available. (Buy the Norrell pack if you decide to go with a registered full-auto 10/22.)

Why fool with foreign-made military surplus that relies on foreign-made ammunition (potentially unreliable supply) that you can't really hunt with effectively, and can't always be shot at every range facility.

If you can have only one, buy the Ruger 10/22.

If you don't have as much money, buy the Marlin Model 60. Equally reliable, but not as versatile/easy to trick out.

  10. Any good used one that you like for that amount of $$$.*Check here for a new rifle for about that amount of $$$.*  >> NEF rifle just type it in the web search area to see it.*

  11. If I was you I would go to a pawn shop and find a gun in the price range, and caliber for what you want to hunt. Also make sure it fits you good. Then wheel and deal:)

  12. A used SKS in excellent condition. They run anywhere from $175-$200 at local pawn shops around where I live here in the mid-south. I collect SKS's from various countries and I missed the best deal the other day. My favorite pawn shop to purchase guns from had an excellent to new condition Romanian SKS for $180 and I didn't have the money to get it. What a total bummer. They are worth more than that and are destined to be collectible someday in the not too distant future.

  13. Heck! just pick up a Mosin-Nagant M91/30 or M44 for under 110$  These are excelent military surplus rifles chambered for 7.62x54r. Surplus ammo can be found in bulk for great prices. Unless the rifle is in perfect condition, don't pay over 110.

If you're going to use it for hunting you'll have to buy soft tipped rounds as the military surplus is mostly FMJ. (unless ofcourse you don't mind breaking the law and putting people past your target at risk, which is a bad idea)

  14. You can buy a Soviet Mosin Nagant 91/30 WWII rifle for $70 at www.jgsales.com, this rifle shoots the powerful 7.62 x 54 mm cartridge ballistically similar to the 30'06. I own one and I bought it there for $70 and the ammo is pretty cheap and plentiful too. Please check it out whenever you get a chance and I hope that I was able to help you.

  15. That is loaded question. It depends what you intend to do with it. For example if it is just for plinking you should consider a .22 like a Ruger 10/22 or a Remington 597, if you want to do some varmint hunting a Marlin 917 is perfect.
