What is a good router to use with a cable modem that has high signal penetration?

My modem is in my basement with my desktop. I am looking for a good router that would be able to penetrate to the upstairs so that I can use my notebook? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Wireless N wireless routers are supposed to have a much better range than any other wireless routers.  But, really any router should be able to get a fairly decent signal through just one level.
