What is a good running program?

I want to start running. Right now I am not very active, i walk a couple times a week. I want to start a program to get into shape for health reasons, what is the best way to go from little activity to running, something like a weekly program to work up to running. My overall goal is to be able to run about 10 miles at a time.

  1. This is what I was told to do but havent tried it yet. Start out by walking one block then running one block. Do this for 20-30 mins for a week. Then increase to alternating walking one block, running 2 blocks. Then walking one block running 3 blocks, etc. Every week you should increase the amount of blocks you run. Eventually you will get to the point where you are not walking but mainly running.
