Well, this is kind of plant related, but also kind of animal related, but how about:

How Hay Could Save Us Millions And Prevent Ecoli Contamination?

Cattle are mostly raised in feed lots now.

In feed lots they are fed a bit of hay, and LOTS of corn (as well as other stuff).

A cows normal rumen (stomach) ph is neutral.

Feeding all that corn to cattle however makes them have an extremely acidic rumen and intestines.

This acidic environment is the PERFECT breeding ground for the Ecoli bacteria.

However if a cow, is fed grass or hay, they have virtually no Ecoli in their system.  

If you take a cow off their corn diet, and feed them hay for only SIX days prior to slaughter it will drop the Ecoli in them to almost zero, and thereby prevent any possible contamination of meat during slaughter!

My sister had to do a science report for a ag class and she grew bean plants and watered them with different drinks to see if they would grow. Surprisingly, they did really well with coke and diet coke.
